Former Google Fiber GM Kevin Lo Joins Facebook

Former Google Fiber general manager Kevin Lo joined Facebook as director of infrastructure connectivity and investments.

Kurt Wagner and Mark Bergen of Re/code reported that Lo ran Google Fiber for five years, leading its operations in its initial three cities, adding that he will not work on Internet.org Free Basics.

Lo announced the move in a Facebook post (embedded below):

I'm excited to let you know that I'm joining Facebook this month as director of infrastructure connectivity and investments. I'll help shape our strategy and investments with partners to build wireless technologies and ecosystems that improve global connectivity.

Facebook has worked hard over the past decade to make the world more open and connected–from partner oriented initiatives like OCP (Open Compute Project) and TIP (Telecom Infra Project) to new wireless connectivity technologies and long-haul fiber optic cables. I'm thrilled about the opportunity to work with like-minded colleagues in leveraging Facebook's open and collaborative approach to innovation.

Facebook said Lo will report to vice president of infrastructure Jason Taylor, and it provided the following statement to Re/code:

We're excited to have Kevin join Facebook. Kevin will help shape our strategy and broader framework for Facebook's infrastructure connectivity investments with partners. He will work alongside Facebook's infrastructure and connectivity teams to help build an active partner ecosystem and accelerate the adoption of new technologies that can drastically change the economics of deploying internet infrastructure.

Brilliant Writers Describe The Dangers Of Donald Trump As Only They Can

Several writers better known for their literary contributions have ventured into the political arena recently to denounce presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. With their words, they've issued evocative warnings.

J.K. Rowling declared Trump "fascist in all but name" in an essay titled "On Monsters, Villains and the EU Referendum," which was posted on her website this week.

"Look towards the Republican Party in America and shudder. 'Make America Great Again!' cries a man who is fascist in all but name," she wrote. "His stubby fingers are currently within horrifyingly close reach of America's nuclear codes. He achieved this pre-eminence by proposing crude, unworkable solutions to complex threats. Terrorism? 'Ban all Muslims!' Immigration? 'Build a wall!' He has the temperament of an unstable nightclub bouncer, jeers at violence when it breaks out at his rallies and wears his disdain for women and minorities with pride. God help America. God help us all."

Rowling had already made her opinion of Trump clear back in December with a devastating comparison to Harry Potter's great foe. "Voldemort was nowhere near as bad" as Trump, she tweeted.

Last month, hundreds of other writers -- including Diana Abu-Jaber, Michael Chabon, Junot Díaz, Rita Dove, Jennifer Egan, Stephen King and Maxine Hong Kingston -- signed an "An Open Letter to the American People" opposing Trump.

As writers, they said, "we are particularly aware of the many ways that language can be abused in the name of power."

Dave Eggers, who also signed that letter, attended one of Trump's rallies earlier this month, seeking to better understand the people who support him.

"Believing that Trump's supporters are all fascists or racists is a grave mistake," Eggers wrote in The Guardian last week. "This day in Sacramento presented a different picture, of a thousand or so regular people who thought it was pretty cool how Trump showed up in a plane with his name on it. How naughty it was when he called the president 'stupid.'"

"Americans who have voted for Trump in the primaries have done so not because they agree with all, or any, of his statements or promises, but because he is an entertainment," Eggers continued. "He is a loud, captivating distraction and a very good comedian ... The moment he ceases to entertain – to say crazy shit – he will evaporate."

Garrison Keillor described Trump in a widely syndicated essay last week as "the C-minus guy who sat behind you in history and poked you with his pencil and smirked when you asked him to stop." The "Prairie Home Companion" creator said Trump doesn't have any kind of philosophy, "just an attitude."

Pointing to Trump's self-congratulatory tweets after a gunman killed 49 people at a gay nightclub, Keillor doubted that Republicans could teach Trump any humility.

"The dreamers in the Republican Party imagine that success will steady him and he will come into the gravitational field of reality but it isn't happening. The Orlando tweets show it: the man does not have a heart," Keillor wrote.

And if Trump wins the presidential election?

"If the man is not defeated, then we are not the country we imagine we are. All of the trillions spent on education was a waste. The churches should close up shop. The nation that elects this man president is not a civilized society," wrote Keillor.

"The gentleman is not airing out his fingernail polish, he is not showing off his wedding ring; he is making an obscene gesture. Ignore it at your peril."

Editor's note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims - 1.6 billion members of an entire religion - from entering the U.S.

Dads Who Tweet (Infographic)

Twitter has a Father's Day gift for dads on the social network in the form of statistics.

U.S. curation lead Marcus Mabry wrote in a blog post that Twitter analyzed 200 million tweets about dads and fathers over the past year, adding:

Many of those come from the 7.5 million people who identify themselves as a “dad” or “father” in their Twitter bios. The most tweeted word to accompany the phrase “fatherhood is …” on Twitter is “fulfilling.”

Twitter found that golf is the most-tweeted-about sport on Father's Day, and the top five dad-related hashtags are:

  1. #Dad

  2. #Fatherhood

Moved By Orlando, 'Matilda' Star Opens Up About Her Sexuality

Mara Wilson, the child star of "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Matilda," opened up about her sexuality in a series of tweets on Sunday, revealing to her followers that she identifies as bisexual and queer.

Now 28, Wilson began the June 12 thread by expressing her grief over the massacre at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida earlier that day.

Wilson, who is the author of a forthcoming memoir, Where Am I Now? True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame, then shared a snapshot of herself partying at a gay club at 18.

She continued the thread:

Naturally, followers responded by asking Wilson to clarify if what she discovered was related to her sexuality. She responded by pointing to the Kinsey Scale, which is also referred to as the Heterosexual-Homosexual Rating Scale. Developed by pioneering sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, the scale is used to measure a person's sexual experience or response at a given time, assigning them a number ranging from zero, which means exclusively heterosexual, to six, meaning exclusively homosexual.

After one follower criticized that description, Wilson stated that she's "embraced the bi/queer label lately."

Still, fans shouldn't expect Wilson to reveal more about her private relationships. She went on to note:

Congratulations, Mara, and kudos to you for living your authentic life!

Twitter, Facebook Suit Up for UEFA EURO 2016

UEFA EURO 2016 kicked off Friday with host France's 2-1 win over Romania, and Twitter and Facebook have soccer fans covered through the tournament's final July 10.

Barthelemy Collin, who works on sports partnerships for Twitter, highlighted that social network's #EURO2016 efforts in a blog post, and they include special emojis, letting soccer fans on Twitter determine the color of the Eiffel Tower's lights each night, users submitting questions for each game's Man of the Match, exclusive insider content and a dedicated Vine channel.

Collin said any tweet featuring the #EURO2016 hashtag will automatically contain an emoji of the EURO 2016 trophy, and fans can express support for their countries, as well, adding:

Fans will also be able to tweet their support for their country with a special national flag emoji. For example, simply include #ENG or #TogetherForEngland, and your tweet will be brought to life with the inclusion of a football containing the St. George's Cross. This exciting feature will be available for all competing nations (e.g., For Spain, #ESP or #VamosEspaña).

Twitter is also taking over host country France's best-known landmark, the Eiffel Tower.

Collin said that 10 minutes after the final whistle of each day's last game, the Eiffel Tower will be illuminated with the colors of the nation that received the most Twitter support that day, and some of the day's best EURO 2016-related tweets will be projected onto the tower.

Also, official tournament accounts @UEFAEURO and @EURO2016 will solicit questions from followers for the Man of the Match following key matches, and these can be submitted using the hashtag #AskMOTM.

Finally, Collin detailed Twitter's efforts to bring Europe's top creative talent to France for the tournament:

Video has become an integral part of how people communicate on Twitter, Vine and Periscope. Between 10 and 20 top creative talents across Europe are headed out to #EURO2016 to create exclusive, insider content.

It will be a huge range in terms of the type of thing you can expect to see over the course of the tournament, including:

The man behind the “Will Grigg's on fire” sensation, Sean Kennedy (@KennoUTJ), will be tweeting and Periscoping from the fan zones as he gets #ENG fans in the mood with his chants. He might even be making an appearance at England vs Russia.

Joe Charman is renowned for his comic trick compilations on Vine, which have made him a viral sensation. He will be creating a series of trick shots in six seconds from in and around the fan zones to keep fans entertained:

Michelin-starred French chef Pierre Gagnaire (@PierreGagnaire) will be getting into the spirit of the event by creating special videos where he cooks up new recipes based on the national cuisine of teams involved on a given match day.

@SpencerOwen (aka Spencer FC) is one of the leading voices in the growing culture of eSports. He unique approach has gained him an enormous social following, and he will be hosting Periscope broadcasts pregame and postgame to capture the match-day atmosphere.

These tweets and Vines will be displayed on giant screens in France, including at all 10 host stadiums.

As for Facebook, the social network said in an email to SocialTimes that 84 million users were responsible for 221 million interactions related to EURO 2016 from May 1 through June 7, and the five teams that generated the most conversation were:

  1. France

  2. England

  3. Russia

Why Facebook's Moments Is the No. 1 Free App on the iTunes App Store

Facebook's stand-alone Moments application, which was received tepidly, at best, suddenly found itself at No. 1 Friday on the iTunes App Store list of free apps, but there's a catch.

TopFreeiPhoneApps

The social network has begun emailing users and warning them that their Synced Photos folders will be deleted July 7, with those images lost unless users download them or install Moments.

TechCrunch shared a screenshot of the email from the @aurevoiralexis Twitter account, and the email reads:

We wanted to let you know that photos you privately synced from your phone to Facebook will be deleted soon. Earlier this year, they were moved to Moments, a new app from Facebook.

If you want to keep your (Facebook user's total saved photos) photos, download Moments and log in before July 7. If you don't want Moments, you can also download these photos directly to your computer from your Facebook profile. Otherwise, they'll be deleted. This won't affect photos or videos you shared on Facebook.

Moments lets you organize and privately share photos with friends. It's free on iOS and Android.

Facebook announced last December that it was eliminating its photo syncing feature and moving backed-up images to Moments Jan. 10.

Pinterest: 2 Billion Idea Searches Per Month

Looking for ideas? It happens more than 2 billion times every month on Pinterest.

Pinterest engineering manager Naveen Gavini announced in a blog post that there are more than 2 billion idea searches on the social network each month from a database of some 75 billion ideas from more than 100 million users.

PinterestSearch

In addition, since launching its visual search tool last November, more than 130 million visual searches are being conducted on Pinterest each month, Gavini wrote.

PinterestVisualSearch

Pinterest also shared the following search-related statistics in an email to SocialTimes:

  • Searching on Pinterest is now twice as fast thanks to infrastructure updates.

  • Pinterest's search infrastructure returns more than 3 billion pins per day.

  • Users see an average of 55 ideas per search, or about five times the number of text results generally returned by search engines.

  • Pinterest users outside of the U.S. are three times more likely to see localized content in search and related pins than they were one year ago.

And Gavini shared details on how Pinterest was able to beef up its search tools:

Building idea search is a whole new technological challenge, and to make it work, we've had to come up with new ways to build our search tools. Here's just a few of the things we've been building that make Pinterest's idea search so different.

We're building the world's catalog of ideas, and over 100 million people around the world have already saved 75 billion ideas here. So unlike regular search engines, which are powered by robots, Pinterest is powered by people and the ideas they hand-select.

With so many millions of overlapping tastes and interests to draw on, Pinterest has the best “people who love X, also love Y” ideas you'll find anywhere.

Delvv's Chatty Keyboard Recommends Content to Android Users as They Type

Mobile application developer Delvv launched Chatty Keyboard on Android. The keyboard is powered by machine learning, and it was designed to recommend sharable content and actions to users based on what they type.

Chatty Keyboard analyzes the context of users' conversations, and it will recommend GIFs, emoji, words and auto-corrections to users as they type. In addition to recommending content, the keyboard can recognize common phrases and connect to other apps to help users complete tasks.

Chatty Keyboard Screenshots

For instance, if a user is planning a meeting with a friend, the keyboard will display an action tag for the user to tap, which will take them to the screen for creating a new calendar event. This event will be pre-filled with information taken from the conversation, such as the meeting time. Additional actions allow users to set reminders, order cars from ride-sharing services and make phone calls.

Finally, users can customize the look of the keyboard with different themes.

In a statement, Felice Miller Gabriel, founder and president of Delvv, commented:

Chatty Keyboard is made for people who want to communicate fast, creatively and expressively. You can waste a lot of time hunting for the perfect emoji or GIF, or switching back and forth between different apps on your smartphone. By analyzing your typed thoughts, Chatty Keyboard fills in the blanks. You're never at a loss for words or images, and getting things done is faster and easier.

Chatty Keyboard is available to download for free on Google Play. The app is coming soon to iOS.
